Introduction to Astronomy

Ecliptic Photo

This relatively rare convergence of (from top to bottom) Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury occurred on March 3, 1999. The nearly linear arrangment with the setting Sun clearly demonstrates that the planets lie close to the ecliptic.

This photo was taken on the Hawaiian island of Maui, and is included here courtesy of Rick Scott.
